Can I actually make a somewhat decent typeface?

BACKGROUND:

I’ve always admired typeface designers and felt it was a too complicated art for me to take on. My love for nice typography has kept me curious to try but I never really dared, until now.

THE CHALLENGE:

Can I make it look cohesive, yet unique? Can I make it look somewhat professional even though I don’t have any experience with typeface design?

SOLUTION:
RESEARCH:

I started designing out all lowercase characters on a 12x12 grid. I decided a line thickness of 3 boxes and then a corner radius of 3 boxes as well. I wanted some kind of serif on the characters for a more interesting look. The initial idea was to have no diagonal lines at all. But further into the process I realised this was a bad rule. I started out designing in Illustrator but moved over to Glyphs 3 for the final touches.

INSIGHT:

Set some rules, then break them.

NARRATIVE:

A

chunky

typeface that has

attitude.

DELIVERABLES:
  • Typeface
NOTES:
  • I started out designing A-Z in different styles all together, then I decided which style was the most interesting and started building the other letters.
  • I started with letter lowercase a
  • It was challenging, but rewarding
  • Most happy about the lowercase z
  • Lowercase was more interesting to design than uppercase for me.
